In March 2016, Barry was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer.  With no cure for his form of cancer, and with an unknown length of time, Barry's passion to make a difference in the lives of others–especially those in Hispanic communities–gave birth to Little Things Matter.  Barry's passion for Mexico emerged when he attended the University of the Americas in Puebla, Mexico.  His desire to master the language motivated him to attend school in Mexico, a pursuit inspired from his multi-lingual Italian father.  The genuineness, gentleness, and character of strength in the people of Mexico captured his heart. 

Growing up poor, Barry understands how access to opportunities can change a person's future.  When his father gave him $100 to attend a Vic Braden tennis camp, it changed the trajectory of Barry's life.  That investment shaped his natural athletic ability, equipping him with a skill that supported him through school and beyond, and continues to multiply into opportunity for others.  Recognizing the power of sports to build confidence and develop character, Barry launched a day tennis camp for the rural children that reside in San Miguel Viejo, Mexico, the catalyst for the later evolvement of Little Things Matter (LTM). Barry’s passion for Mexico and Hispanic communities evolved into a family pursuit that Debora and Lena continue. 

Barry and Debora married in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico in 1992. In 2003, their daughter Lena was born.  Seeking to educate and immerse Lena into the Hispanic language and culture, the family spent summers in Mexico. Debora attended Dallas Theological Seminary, completing a Master of Arts Degree in Cross-Cultural ministry in 2018.  The legacy that began with Barry’s passion continues to shape the purpose and propel the mission–providing opportunities and empowerment to the marginalized in the little things that matter. The foundation provides small-scale investment to encourage education, skills and business development in lives and communities that lack access to resources and generates long-term, eternal impact.
